Fort Smith to Memphis, through North Little Rock
Interstate 40 crosses Arkansas from the Oklahoma line to the Mississippi River bridge at Memphis, and the stretch through central Arkansas is the busiest. Coming from the west, it passes Morrilton, turns south at Conway, and runs past Mayflower and Maumelle into North Little Rock. There it meets I-430 (Exit 147), the end of I-30 (Exit 153), I-57 (Exit 155), and I-440 (Exit 159) in about 12 miles. East of Galloway, it straightens out across the flat Delta toward Lonoke, Brinkley, and West Memphis.
The North Little Rock interchanges are where most of the trouble concentrates. Traffic merges and weaves between I-30, I-40, and I-57, and the next phase of the 30 Crossing project targets the I-30/I-40 interchange starting in 2026. A breakdown there means working next to heavy, fast traffic in tight space.

Where trucks break down on I-40
- The North Little Rock interchanges. Between Exits 147 and 159, merges, weaves, and construction make it the hardest stretch to work on a shoulder. If the truck can move, get off at an exit.
- Galloway. Hundreds of trucks park overnight at Exit 161, so mornings bring dead batteries, air systems that bled down, and problems found on the pre-trip.
- Conway to North Little Rock. Heavy commuter traffic at rush hour and long uphill pulls out of the river bottoms with a load on in July.
- East toward Lonoke. Fast, flat, open interstate where blowouts and heat-related failures show up, and where the scales catch brake and tire defects.
What to do while you wait
Turn on your hazards, set out your triangles, and stay out of the travel lanes. If it’s safe, wait away from the truck, behind a guardrail or well off the road — trucks stopped on I-40 shoulders do get hit. In summer, bring water and find shade.
